What is the purpose of the steering wheel?

The main purpose of the steering wheel system is to guide the driver to go in his desired direction. The steering wheel is connected to the car by components that make it possible for the driver to control the whole vehicle by navigating the steering wheel.

What are the Types of the Steering System?

There are two types of steering wheel systems:

Hydraulic Steering System 

In this kind of steering system, hydraulic pressure is used to keep the steering wheel working. It multiplies the force given to the steering wheel to keep the vehicle moving on the road. The hydraulic pressure is produced by a rotary vane pump or generator driven by the vehicle’s engine. 

Electronic Steering System

This is also known as the power steering system. This system augments the steering effort needed to turn the vehicle. It makes it easier for the driver to maneuver the vehicle. The electronic steering system uses an electric motor to keep the vehicle running. 

What are the 3 types of steering?

Hand-to-hand Steering System 

In this type of steering system, the hand nerve leaves the wheel. The left hand is positioned on the 7and 8 while the right hand is grasped on the 4 and 5. If you desire to turn to the right then your left-hand pushes over and vice versa. In this kind of steering, there is less possibility for your hand to cross–ver and lesser injury to the face, hand, and arm. 

Hand-over-Hand Steering

This type of steering is ideal for situations that are trickier such as driving under low speed due to low visibility, recovering from a skid, or parking. Your left-hand grasp is positioned between 8 and 9 while your right hand is positioned between 3 and 4. Your right grasps the wheels and pushes up and your left let’s go, reaches across the arm, grabs the wheel then pulls up, over, and down if needed. But if your right hand is the one working then vice versa. To get back on the straight path, reverse the process. 

One-hand Steering

In situations where one hand is needed to reach something, make sure that the other stays on the wheel. Place your hand you will use for steering at 8-8 or 3-4, depending on the design of the wheel. One-hand steering can keep the vehicle stable, steering reversals are reduced and extra efforts are allowed if needed.

What connects to the steering wheel?

Several components are connected to make the steering wheel do its function and work.

  • Steering Wheels 

This is the part that is used to control the steering and it contains traffic indicator lights, wiper switch, light switch, and others. 

  • Steering Shaft

This is also called the steering shaft which can be found inside the hollow steering column. It rotates when the steering wheel is turned. The motion is then transmitted to the steering box.  

  • Steering Gear

This is responsible for transmitting the driver’s steering input to the steering linkage that turns the steering wheel. The driver’s steering changes are then multiplied to make the front wheel move more than the steering wheel. 

  • Drop Arm 

It is responsible for transmitting the motion it receives from the steering gearbox to the tie rod. During a suspension lift, it corrects the steering. 

  • Ball Joints

These are spherical bearings that are responsible for connecting control arms to the steering knuckles.
